WHY DO REGULAR DENTAL VISITS MATTER?
Visiting your dentist regularly allows them to spot problems early on while treatment is often easier and more affordable. Regular dental visits can also prevent dental issues from occurring in the first place. Certain medical conditions and diseases have symptoms that appear in the mouth, and not going to the dentist may cause them to go undiagnosed.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS I NEED TO SEE A DENTIST?
There are many reasons why you may need to schedule an appointment with your dentist, including the following:
- Teeth are sensitive to hot or cold
- Gums are puffy, or they bleed when you floss or brush
- Checkups for your crowns, fillings, dentures, or dental implants
- You don’t like the way your smile looks
- You experience persistent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth
- You are pregnant
- You have swelling in your face, mouth, or neck
- You have trouble swallowing or chewing
- Your family has a history of tooth decay or gum disease
- You have cardiovascular disease, diabetes, an eating disorder, or HIV
- You frequently experience dry mouth
- You smoke or use tobacco products
- You are undergoing treatments, including radiation, hormone replacement therapy, or chemotherapy
- Your jaw is painful or pops when opening and closing, chewing, or when you first wake up
- You have an uneven bite
- You have a sore in your mouth that doesn’t look or feel right or isn’t going away
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY DENTAL CHECKUP?
When you visit DentAlign NYC for a dental checkup, we will make sure you’re comfortable. Your dentist or hygienist will ask you about your recent medical history. Your mouth will be examined, and you may need x-rays. Special dental instruments may be used to check your gums for gum disease. Your dentist will perform an evaluation of your overall dental health as well as conducting an oral cancer screening. This involves holding your tongue with gauze and then checking your tongue and overall mouth as well as feeling your jaw and neck.
WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT A BROKEN OR CHIPPED TOOTH?
A tooth can fracture or fall out due to extreme circumstances, and tooth decay can increase the chances of having a tooth break or chip. Whether or not you’re experiencing pain from a fractured or broken tooth, it’s essential to see your dentist right away. When this occurs, your tooth may be exposed to the bacteria in your mouth, which could lead to new or increased decay, as well as the loss of your tooth. If you have a tooth that’s been knocked out, retrieve the tooth and seek emergency dental care. A tooth can sometimes be implanted after it’s been knocked out, but time is critical. A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being re-implanted within the first 30 minutes after the incident.
WHAT IS CONSIDERED A DENTAL EMERGENCY?
Dental emergencies are characterized as conditions where pain, swelling, or discomfort are present, and the patient cannot help themselves. Any dental problem requiring immediate treatment to alleviate severe pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth is most likely a dental emergency. Dental emergencies also include severe infections that may be life-threatening.
HOW CAN I RELIEVE A TOOTHACHE?
There are a few things you can try if you’re experiencing continual mouth pain or discomfort. These may provide temporary toothache relief, but it’s still essential to visit a dentist to get treated. Remove food fragments by brushing and flossing your teeth and then rinse your mouth with warm water. You can take aspirin for the pain, but do not put it directly against your gums near the aching tooth. While toothache pain may subside, it will most likely return until you address the underlying issue.
WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL?
Root canals are often dreaded, but they’re also misunderstood and not as painful as many people think. Root canals are necessary when the nerves and blood system in the canals of your teeth become infected or are damaged by trauma. Infection is the most common reason for a root canal, but trauma is another likely reason. Traumatic events include car accidents, or getting hit with an object or by another person. Your dentist will remove the infected or traumatized portions of your tooth. Next, the canals and pulp chamber are cleaned, and the area is disinfected. The canals are then dried out and filled with a rubber-like compound called gutta-percha. A crown or similar restoration is then placed on the tooth to strengthen it.

HOW CAN I MAINTAIN A HEALTHY SMILE?
You can maintain your healthy smile in conjunction with your dentist. Building a relationship with your dentist is important. Regular visits allow them to catch oral problems early on. Issues like gum disease and cavities are easier to treat at early stages. Practice healthy habits, including brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily. Keep your dentist informed of any changes to your overall health or dental health. Be involved in your treatment plan, and ask questions. Make sure you understand your treatment and your responsibilities to maintain your healthy smile.
