Pregnancy and Dental Care: What Every Mother-to-Be Should Know
Having a baby changes your body and your whole life. Most women don’t realize that it even impacts their dental health! Along with preparing a nursery, taking extra naps, and keeping all your prenatal appointments, you must see your dentist.
At DentAlign NYC, Dr. Kenn Kakosian and his staff welcome expectant mothers. We want to ensure your dental health remains tip-top throughout your pregnancy and that you don’t have any oral health issues that could affect your baby.
Oral health and pregnancy
The hormonal changes that accompany pregnancy are well-known, and you are likely already familiar with the effects of those fluctuations. Hormonal changes can cause various effects, some that seem completely unrelated, including changes to your dental health. Studies have shown, for example, that pregnant women have a greater risk of developing periodontal disease than other people.
You also have an increased risk of cavities, possibly due to changes to your diet to accommodate cravings for sugary or starchy foods. Morning sickness, too, can be problematic because your teeth are exposed to more stomach acid, which is damaging.
Immediately rinsing your mouth with water and baking soda after you throw up can help neutralize the acid. However, you should wait about 30 minutes before brushing.
Your normal dental hygiene routine of brushing twice daily and flossing once will help prevent cavities. A professional dental exam during pregnancy is also important.
Pregnancy risks and dental issues
Your overall health is a huge factor in your baby's development, including your dental health. According to the New York State Department of Health, oral bacteria associated with dental decay are transmissible from mother to child during pregnancy and after birth.
Additionally, if your dental problems are untreated, they could lead to later dental problems for your child. That means your pregnancy, the birth of your child, and your child’s future dental health are all at risk if you have oral health problems during pregnancy. Scheduling a dental visit as soon as you know you’re expecting is the best way to lower all those risks.
Dental procedures during pregnancy
Most dental procedures are perfectly safe for pregnant women during all three trimesters. Getting treatment for cavities and professional cleaning is important for a healthy pregnancy.
Even more intensive procedures, such as a root canal or extraction, are safe. We can use local anesthetics safely so you’re comfortable and get the needed treatment. Even dental X-rays are safe with the right protection.
If you’re expecting, congratulations! Make an appointment at DentAlign NYC to ensure you don’t have any unexpected dental health issues.
